The CTM-500 uses external antennas for cellular, Wi-Fi and GNSS. If the CTM-500 is mounted with a clear view of the sky, an external antenna is connected between the device and the OBDII or J1939 port of the vehicle. For other mounting scenarios where the CTM-500 may be obstructed from a clear view of the sky, GPS(GNSS). Cypress Solutions recommends:

  • Draw power Power from vehicle CAN Bus diagnostic link connector (DLC) (OBDII/J1939) - no other cabling required

  • For non-CAN vehiclesvehicles where DLC is not supported/desired, the device can be connected with a DC power cable for direct
    connection

The most effective installation method we recommend is to connect the CTM-500 to power via the vehicle’s OBDII or J1939, place the CTM-500 on the dashboard, under the seat, on the window, or any other suitable position, and attach the external antenna to a window. This installation can be completed in roughly five minutes with the wires hidden.

Please refer to CTM-ONE In-Vehicle installation for a graphical illustration.

CAN2.0B Bus

The CAN interface is primarily utilized to connect to vehicle subsystems that support CAN communications. This includes small and light-duty vehicles manufactured in 2008 and later (ISO 15765-4), as well as heavy-duty vehicles that are compatible with J1939 protocol.

To interface with a vehicle's Engine Control Unit (ECU), an accessory OBDII or J1939 cable is necessary. The CTM-500 can be powered directly from the CAN port, eliminating the need for additional cabling if the vehicle supports OBDII or J1939 communications. The CTM-500 supports both medium and high-speed CAN interfaces.
